Paul Masindi, the trainer of Limpopo’s flyweight boxing champion, Rofhiwa Maphupha, has vowed that his talented boxer will beat the KwaZulu-Natal flyweight boxing champion, Fanele Mhlungu, when the two boxers meet in an interprovincial championship fight at the Escort Hall in KwaZulu-Natal on 30 March.
The standard of refereeing in the region was one of the hot topics on the agenda during the Safa Vhembe Regional League’s executive committee meeting, held at the University of Venda Hall last Saturday. The meeting resolved that an urgent need exists for the association to arrange coaching and refereeing courses, so that referees and coaches affiliated with the association could attain the necessary minimum requirements.
Teams affiliated with the Limpopo Stream of the ABC Motsepe League are gearing up for tough matches this weekend. Three matches will be played on Friday afternoon, with the remaining fixtures scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
With nine matches remaining before the current Motsepe Foundation Championship League programme comes to an end, teams are doing everything possible to gain promotion to the DStv Premiership Division and to escape the relegation axe. Black Leopards are still optimistic that they will collect enough points in their remaining fixtures to secure a place in the promotional playoffs.
The Liguluvhe Easter Soccer Tournament was officially launched during a ceremony held at Munau Primary in Ramantsha on Sunday, 10 March. Sixteen teams from around Sinthumule and Kutama, who play in the Makhado LFA and Safa Vhembe Hollywoodbets league, will compete for prizes and trophies.
The Soutpansberg Squash Club in Louis Trichardt is celebrating as three of its junior players, Richter Myburgh, Iyaadh Aboobacker, and Elardus Barnard, competed at the Polokwane Squash Club in the Junior Limpopo Championships on 8 and 9 March. The talented Richter Myburgh secured a spot in the team to represent Limpopo at the SACD tournament later this year, while the club eagerly awaits news on the remaining players who might also be included in the team.
The fixtures for the 15th edition of the Hollywoodbets Easter Soccer Challenge will be announced on Saturday (16 March) during the official launch of the competition.
With this year's Absa Cape Epic Cycle Race around the corner, preparation time for Louis Trichardt cyclists Kombo Bere (26) and Daan Terblanche (23) is running out quickly. However, the duo said they were ready and up for the challenge. As reported earlier, Kombo and Daan received the unique opportunity to compete in this year's Cape Epic, entering as a development team and having their R145,000 entry fee waived by the race organisers. By entering, they became the first development team from the Soutpansberg to compete in the Cape Epic. For both this is also a dream come true as neither of them has done the Cape Epic before.
The fight for promotion and to avoid relegation continues this weekend in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, with six matches set for Saturday, one for Friday, and one for Sunday afternoon.
